Sitting in the Passenger Seat: Google Drive

This week we're on the road with Google Drive! Google Drive offers so many possibilities for its users. The most basic ways to utilize Google Drive are to store files that can be accessed from any computer (with internet connection) or to share files with other Drive users from any location. However, the world of Google Drive is almost endless -- there are so many other features that can be useful for educators or people working in any fields. Google Drive offers many collaborative opportunities, allowing users to create and share documents that other users can edit or contribute to. Google Drive includes free online programs similar to Word (Docs), Excel (Sheets) and Powerpoint (Slides) that are user-friendly and have wonderful customization features.

Additionally, Google Drive offers other collaboration tools such as Forms, where you can create surveys or other forms to gain feedback from users; Google Drawings, where you can create graphic organizers or illustrations to share; Google Maps, where you could plan out an entire vacation before getting on a plane or setting off on a road trip; and Google Sites, where you can even build a simple website for other users to visit.


This week I created my first Google Form, asking the other teachers who work in my building to give feedback about certain aspects of their classrooms. Since we are a new building in our district this year and only have 4 classrooms, this would be a great way for us to share our ideas and collaborate on how we can improve our school site to best serve our children and families. One more thing I have to mention about Google Drive is an amazing tool that allows you to turn pdf. files and images into editable text! Can you believe it? You can also take photos of text using your cell phone and convert them into readable .pdf files to be saved and shared. This week I was introduced to a new online bookmarking tool called  Symbaloo . Symbaloo is different than other bookmarking programs I've seen because users can create a specific "webmix" or visual collection of bookmarks with a particular purpose. For example, this week I made a webmix of the educational websites that are safe for my preschoolers to use independently. By using Symbaloo, students are able to quickly choose a recognizable bookmark and begin working or playing. I also did some playing around with Padlet this week. Padlet is a collaboration tool that can be used to organize a variety of ideas and resources. I've participated on Padlet walls as a student, however I've never created a template on my own. Classroom, Photos, and Where Has Google Keep Been All My Life?

This week I learned about some new Google tools that will definitely help make #teacherlife a little easier. First, let's talk about  Google Classroom . For anyone who has never used this platform before (like me about 6 days ago), it's a great way to connect with students from your class online by sharing announcements, creating polls or quizzes, asking discussion questions, and also posting assignments. One of my favorite aspects is that, when you post an assignment, you can also include a due date and links to any websites, videos, or required reading materials with the post like a nicely wrapped package all ready to go. There are several customization tools in Classroom, like the layout and themes for appearance, but you can also add important files and relevant learning materials to the About section that can be accessed at any time throughout the duration of a course or school year. Google Earth vs. Google Tour Builder: Which One Should I Use?

Anyone who's been around a computer in the last several years has probably heard of Google Earth . While I was aware that I could use Google Earth to look at different places around the world from a realistic view, I hadn't spent a lot of time exploring this program prior to this week. Google Earth is a great tool for teachers to use in the classroom because it allows for an instant geography lesson -- at any moment, you can search for a place or landmark and be automatically taken to an aerial or street view of that location to show to students, like a virtual field trip. You could use these features to connect to students home addresses or explore the Sydney Opera House in Australia -- the possibilities are open wide. For example, I can type in the location of our Head Start school and show my students how Google Earth zooms right in to see our building, parking lot and the playground they use every day!
